The celebration of Halloween dates back over 2000 years. The Celtics, who worshiped the Sun God believed that he was responsible for sustaining life. Samhain, lord of the dead, was also worshiped. The Druids, Celtic priests, built fires on hilltops believing it would strengthen said Sun God and defeat the lord of darkness. Their belief was that on October 31st, the dead souls would reappear as animals and wander all over the earth. Celebrating with a devil outfit is still popular today.

The “sacred fires” built by the Druids was fueled by burned crops and sacrificed some animals. These ceremonies continued through the night and one ember of the fire was delivered to each home to start their fire and ward off the evil spirits of the new year.

This continued until the Romans conquered the Celts. Their All Saints Eve, All Saints Day and All Hallows day were established to hopefully be rid of previous rituals. It did not work.

When the Irish immigrated to the United States in the 1840′s they brought with them yet another tradition. That of the Jack O’ Lantern. It was said that this man Jack, was a stingy drunk who made a deal with the devil. He seduced the devil into an apple tree and drew a cross on the tree to prevent his decent. He then made the devil swear that his soul was safe and that the devil would not come after it.

When Jack died, he was turned away from the pearly gates because of his meanness and his drunkenness. He then pursued the devil with hopes of having someplace to go. The devil, however, was true to his word and told him to return to where he had come from. It is believed that the devil then tossed him a lighted coal to light the way and Jack placed the coal into a turnip that he was eating.
The Irish children subsequently carved out turnips to light the Halloween night. When they came to America, the pumpkin was making an even better lantern and thus, the tradition continued.
